Homework: Problem Sets Problem sets will be assigned approx. a week in advance of their due dates. Late problem sets will not be accepted. You are encouraged to complete the problem sets, since hands-on applied work (computer or otherwise) is essential to learning the material presented in this course. Problem sets will be done in groups of two or three. Survey Research Project The class will identify several topics of interest to them, which will form the basis for the survey research projects. There will be several topics among which students may indicate their preferences. We will convene project teams for each topic. Students on the team will have some latitude to explore particular research questions of their choice. One student on each team will be assigned the role of manager and one student will be assigned the role of deputy manager. It will be their responsibility to assign students to the various tasks that must be done to complete the data collection portion of the project over the course of both semesters (e.g., writing survey questions, identifying the appropriate sample, producing the survey, entering the responses into a data file). Several problem sets and assignments will focus on individual and team tasks related to the project, and there will ultimately be a final report (last day of class, Spring 2002), which will summarize the results of your analysis and recommendations. |
