FREE DEMOCRATS

The Free Democrats are a social liberal party -- economic liberals in the European sense as strong advocates of a free market, but with a program of social policies closer to the American sense of "liberals." With about 24 percent of the parliament they were the largest opposition party in the first postcommunist parliament (1990-1994). The Free Democrats and the Young Democrats (with about 10 percent of parliament) consistently voted on the same side of many important issues, but parted ways during the 1994 elctoral campaign.
