Intercepts of a Linear Equation

x intercept The x intercept is the point where the line crosses the x axis. At this point y = 0.
y intercept The y intercept is the point where the line crosses the y axis. At this point x = 0.

Consider the following equation:

6x      +3y          =      18

To find the x intercept set y = 0.

6x      + 3(0)      =      18
6x                      =      18
x                                 3            The x intercept is (3,0)

To find the y intercept set x = 0.

6(0)      +3y       =      18
3y                      =      18
y                        =      6              The y intercept is (0,6)
