Education and Conflict in Haiti: Rebuilding the Education Sector after the 2010 Earthquake
Reforming the largely dysfunctional education sector is crucial for the success of Haitian society and it also effects the country's long-term security and stabilization needs.
Problems in the Education Sector:
- Limited financial support
- High dropout rates
- Low enrollment rates
- High repetition rates
- Linguistic barriers
- Limited materials, expertise, management and organization of the education sector
- Most schools (98%) are privatized and most are tuition-based.
These problems began long before the earthquake hit, but since the 2010 earthquake they have been compounded. Education also has a strong urban bias. Rural Haiti, which has 70% of the country's population, only receives 20% of the national educational expenditures.
