How China’s Grass Root NGOs use web2.0 to facilitate their work.
In this part of the wiki, we are trying to explore and evaluate ways how China grass root NGO’s use web2.0 as a lever to motivate large groups of volunteers to act for a common cause in different areas。( such as environment, health, education, and services for the disabled)。

I Background
According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, by the end of 2006, there are 346,000 registered Non Government Organizations in China.
China's NGO’s, usually called People’s organization (minjian zhuzhi) or Social Group(she hui tuan ti),have increased steadily in number over the past several years. But while they may be multiplying, they are not necessarily flourishing at their beginning stage.
In the meanwhile, China’s Internet industry continues to be in a state of rapid development. In 2006, the number of Chinese Internet users exceeded 150 million, with 50% of these users between the ages of 18 and 35.
China’s raising young age middle class community tends to be spend less time watching tv and spending more time on the internet. They are also the major driving force in the web2.0 internet community.

1) What is “one kilogram project”? (mentioned as 1kg below)
With its slogan known as “one kilogram more in your travel pack”, 1kg is a volunteer project which focuses on the improvement in life quality and education of children in impoverished areas of China. It is organized by a group of youth who have rich experience as both volunteers and travelers. It’s official website is http://www.1kg.cn

2) The idea of the 1kg is simple:
travelers bringing 1kg of inexpensive educational materials in addition to their package to give away to some one that needs it along their journey, e.g. kids that cannot even afford a pencil rubber in the rural area.
The simple process of passing-communicating-sharing will not only help the kids in need but also enrich travelers’ travel experience.
3) How to participate in 1kg More?
3 steps recommended by the 1kg project
1. Passing - Prepare 1kg of books or stationeries for underprivileged kids you may meet in your journey;
2. Communicating - Talk to and play with kids and get to know them;
3. Sharing - Share your travelogues with people via 1kg forum and spread the words among friends and around.

III Monitoring and evaluation process of the 1kg project:
1) more than 200 volunteers from all over China has joined in.
2) have organized more than 20 travel events through this project’s initiative in 2004.
3) donated more than 10,000 stationeries and 3000 books(15 books per volunteer)
4) in addition to donation, the project organizes various activities to assist impoverished students, such as “I have a dream”, “Write a booklist”, “Have a lesson for the children”
