POLITICS AND SOCIETIES IN POST-REVOLUTIONARY EAST CENTRAL EUROPE
İİİİ The purpose of this colloquium is to examine contemporary political, social, and intellectual issues in the countries of East Central Europe.İ Students will accomplish this in the following ways:
1) By attending every class and participating actively. The conscientious and timely preparation of class reports is imperative. The readings listed below are not an exhaustive treatment, nor are they required reading; they are meant simply to help guide students through the literature and to stimulate discussion. On-line catalogues and databases will have to be consulted as students will be expected to tap a wide range of journals for the latest relevant articles for the presentations. Each student will prepare one 25-minute oral presentation -- which cannot serve as a paper topic -- over the course of the term. Presenters will be responsible for finding at least one appropriate article on his/her topic to distribute in class the week prior to that presentation so that everyone can become acquainted with the issues and take part intelligently in the discussion. We will begin by addressing the relationship of various regional countries with multilateral organizations (NATO, the West European Union, the European Union, OSCE, EBRD, the Council of Europe, the Central European Initiative, and CEFTA); move on to examine the challenges facing the Yugoslav successor states; then discuss economics, security, and citizenship issues in the Baltics. An analysis of current politics in Slovakia, Albania, Romania, and Bulgaria follow. The lastİ weekís topics will be chosen in consultation with the class. Students are encouraged to produce outlines and hand-outs for distribution via email before their presentations in class, and use Powerpoint to help make their presentations as effective as possible.
2) In order to facilitate the acquisition of up-to-date search techniques, the colloquium will introduce students to the latest computer research tools through which recently published journal articles, books and other resources can be located. Research teams will be assembled and students will demonstrate their ability to navigate the web, work together, and produce useful bibliographies that will then be published on the Internet.
3) Students will write two 10-page analytical essays; the first due no later than Wednesday, March 13, the second, Wednesday, April 17. Students must receive approval for paper topics by February 13.İ All essays will be submitted to a publisher for review and possible publication.
İİİİ Knowledge of an East Central European language is useful but not mandatory.İ Students should have an adequate background in Soviet/East European studies and have taken a graduate lecture course such as U4525 (Postwar Politics of East Central Europe), or an undergraduate survey such as W3531 (Politics of East Central Europe) or W3517 (Political Processes and Systems in Contemporary East Central Europe).İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ
