A Note from the Editor for Students and Teachers:

The selections in this volume of the Journal reflect fine examples of how previous students in the course have approached the assignments in University Writing. The essays by Torre Gomez, Orbey, and Susel apply a critical lens they have derived from a published text to a subject of their choosing. Afroz, McGlennen, and Shih???s essays orchestrate rich intellectual conversations among sources they have encountered, and contribute strong arguments of their own. After conducting substantial research of their own on a subject of their choice, Minoff, Ng, and Pan present arguments that sustain a spirit of inquiry. Black and Lih write to explore their own processes and ideas about the act of writing in academic contexts to mark their development as readers and writers. I hope you enjoy reading these essays, and find them helpful to you as you develop your practice as a writer at Columbia and beyond.
