The selections in this volume of the Journal reflect fine examples of how students in the course have approached the assignments in University Writing. The essays by Bryk, Chester, Kohn, and Kornman apply a critical lens they have derived from a published text to a subject of their choosing. Benedict, Griffith, Powers, and Tower's essays orchestrate rich intellectual conversations among sources they have encountered, and contribute strong arguments of their own. After conducting substantial research of their own on a subject of their choice, Artuso, Maier-Balough, Ramm, and Simmonds present arguments that sustain a spirit of inquiry. We hope you enjoy reading these essays, and find them helpful as you develop your practice as a writer at Columbia and beyond.
