Color Palette Reduction
 
By reducing the number of colors in the palette, you can achieve a significant reduction in the size of the image, at some cost to quality. The trick is finding the minimum number of colors needed to render your image acceptably. Here are some examples using type:

 

 

4 colors - not enough
5 colors - barely acceptable
6 colors - acceptable
7 colors - nearly indistinguishable from 8
8 colors - well rendered
