CURRENT STATE OF MACINTOSH KERMIT Wed May 22 15:28:44 1996 Macintosh Kermit is an unfinished and unsupported software program. It is usable for most serial-communication purposes, but it does not have a comprehensive manual, and there have been no Macintosh programmers devoted to upgrading and maintaining it since about 1988. Nevertheless, occasional upgrades and fixes have been made on an ad-hoc basis since then. The current version is 0.993(192), which is a prerelease of an Alpha-test version, based on a Alpha version of C-Kermit 6.0.192. Although it is not supported in any way, this is the version we recommend because: a. It fixes the problem exhibited by earlier releases in which the program would bomb during downloads on Power Macs and/or system 7.1 or later. b. It uses the Communications Tool Box, and so can be used with various devices that earlier versions could not be used with. The last formal release of Mac Kermit was 0.9(40) in 1988. Unfortunately, it does not work very well on newer Macintoshes or Systems. However, newer versions are too big for 512K Macs or below, so you'll have to run 0.9(40) on these old models. A comprehensive user manual will be published when and if the final 1.0 release is ever completed. Sorry, I can't give any reasonable estimate about when that will be. Watch the comp.protocols.kermit.misc newsgroup for further announcements. Mac Kermit 0.993(192) is available via anonymous ftp from kermit.columbia.edu, directory kermit/test/macintosh, file ckm192.hqx.
