Teachers College, Columbia University, the nation's first and largest graduate school of education, began in 1880 in Greenwich Village, New York City, to teach the domestic arts to poor immigrant women. In 1887, it moved to 120th and Broadway on the campus of Columbia University, where it is still housed and continues to prepare educators and conduct scholarly research in the fields of education, psychology and health throughout the life cycle. Teachers College has been the site of many major innovations and discoveries in education. The history of Teachers College, on display at the New York Historical Society, is to a large degree the history of modern education and of New York City.
