Models for managing the impact an influenza epidemic

Joint work with Daniel Bienstock .

Submitted [pdf]

The continuous mutation of the influenza virus has raised concerns about a new pandemic with high contagious rates. We analyze strategies for mitigating the impact of a severe influenza epidemic on critical social infrastructure. Our approach involves the procurement of additional resources in response to a robust model of the epidemic’s evolution. We do so by using an algorithm analogous to the generalized Benders' decomposition that proves fast and numerically accurate. Our goal is to bring insights on the structure of optimal robust strategies and on practical rules-of-thumb that can be deployed during the epidemic.
