Medieval European Coinage: Northern Italy
FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM
Applications are invited for a Research Associate in the Department of
Coins & Medals, working on the Medieval European Coinage project. The
post is jointly funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board and
Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.
The Research Associate will assist the two authors of the Medieval
European Coinage volume 12 (Northern Italy), covering the coinages of
Lombardy, Piedmont, Liguria, Veneto and Tyrol, 10th - 15th centuries.
Duties will include undertaking research for and drafting sections on
the historical and economic background and the coinages of certain
regions, assisting with the preparation of the catalogue and plates,
and some editing of the foreign authors' manuscripts.
Applicants should have a relevant degree (e.g. medieval history or
archaeology) and have pursued advanced research, preferably in Italian
medieval history, to a PhD. He/she should have a broad knowledge of
medieval and economic history, good spoken and reading languages
(Italian would be especially useful), and experience in writing and/or
editing. Fluency in English as a native speaker is important.
The appointment will be for 15 months, starting as soon as possible.
Salary is in the range #16,775 p.a. to #23,256 p.a.

Medieval/Honors. The University of Kentucky invites applications for a
joint appointment in the Department of History and the Honors Program
in the field of medieval European history. The position is a tenure
track assistant professorship with tenure in History. The successful

The history department at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, in

assistant professorship in Byzantine history, beginning August 2001, to be
known as the John W. and Jeanne M. Rowe Professorship. For the first four
years, the candidate will spend one semester teaching full-time in the
graduate and undergraduate programs at Wisconsin, and one semester in

The University of Chicago Society of Fellows is now accepting
applications for four-year postdoctoral teaching appointments as
Harper and Schmidt Fellows who hold the rank of Collegiate
Assistant Professor. The Fellows are members of the College
Faculty whose primary responsibility is to teach in the general
education program.
Core courses in the Humanities typically deal with fundamental
issues and texts in history, philosophy, and literature.
Currently, the Core is organized into seven year-long courses:
Human Being and Citizen; Greek Thought and Literature;
Philosophical Perspectives on the Humanities; Readings in World
Literature; Perspectives on Language in the Humanities; Media
Aesthetics; and Reading Cultures: Collecting, Travelling, and
Capitalist Cultures.
Core courses in the Social Sciences explore, on the basis of
significant works, the fundamental concepts and the different
modes of inquiry that have defined the social sciences in the
modern period. Currently, the Core is organized into six
yearlong courses: Self, Culture and Society; Mind; Classics of
Social and Political Thought; Power, Identity, and Resistance;
Wealth, Power, and Virtue; and Democracy and Social Sciences.
Some Fellows also teach in the History of Western Civilization
Core sequence. Western Civilization is taught on the basis of
intensive readings of significant primary source documents.
The Fellowships are open to scholars in all disciplines and
areas of specialization who will have completed all requirements
for their Ph.D. degree no later than May 31, 2001. In most
years, Fellows teach two seminars (usually of identical
preparation) for each of three quarters. Each Fellow also has
the opportunity to design an independent course and each is
eligible for one quarter of research sabbatical in their third
year of residence. The annual salary for 2001-2002 will be
$37,000.
