Antipolo, Rizal Philippines

The Save Sight Missions was conducted from February 5-9, 2001  at the P. Ilusorio Geriatric Center in Antipolo, Rizal. Prior to the trip, a fund raising concert  “An Evening of Jazz and A Tribute to Elvis”. was held at the Clark Auditorium, Milstein Building, Columbia University. The Jazz band “The Steamboat Stompers” was led by Dr. Linsy Farris. Guest performer from the Jazz band was Dr. Cynthia McKay. Christmas carols and selections from the Aloha concert was performed by Dr. Antonio M. Gonzales.

A 2 story complex was built in Antipolo by Mrs. Nena Ilusorio, the  “P. Ilusorio Center for Geriatric Care” in memory of her late husband.. The project was facilitated by Dr. John H. Park, family friend of the Ilusorio’s.  Ophthalmology residents from UST and Sukob foundation staff stayed here. Attending staff from Save Sight were given accommodations at the family guest house a few blocks from the center.

There were 50 cataracts performed and 7 other procedures such as 6 pterygiums and 1 strabismus surgery.

Prior to returning to the United States, a CME was conducted at the UST Eye Center on Feb 9, 2001: “Secondary IOL Implantation With Pars-Plana Hammock Suspension Sutures“ by Dr. John H. Park, “RF Electronic Capsulotomy” by Dr. Antonio M. Gonzales.

Donations were turned over to the UST Department of Ophthalmology, gift from of  Mr. Heinz D. Rosskothen, retired Chief of BioEngineering, Columbia University and benefactor of Save Sight Missions.
