Volume 1 May 1997 Restoring sight in distant places!

          On the centennial anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal, an ophthalmologist and national hero of the Philippines, SaveSight Missions, a team of ophthalmologist, anesthetist and nurses began its 9-day missions in Calamba, Laguna, his birthplace. Coincidentally, it is also the centennial of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's 100 years of excellence in eye care.

          In a 9-day period from Jan 28 to Feb 6, the team performed surgery at Pamana Hospital in Calamba Laguna, Angeles City Hospital in Pampanga and Narvacan District Hospital in Ilocos Sur, totaling 69 cataract operations and 2 strabismus operations.

          The mission in Pamana Hospital in Calamba was coordinated by the Lions Club and the Association of Philippine Practicing Physician in America.

          The mission in Angeles City Hospital, Angeles, Pampanga was coordinated by the Rotary Club and Philippine Medical Association in America.

          The mission in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur District Hospital was coordinated by the Fil-American Association of Ilocos Sur, Ladies Circle and Rotary Club of Narvacan and members of the Philippine American Medical Society of New Jersey.
