Major Air Pollutants:

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide (CO)

       -gas

-colorless, odorless, poisonous, blue flame, slightly lighter than   air

-produced when fuels carbon are burned with too little oxygen or at too high temperatures

-in the presence of adequate oxygen, most CO is immediately oxidized to CO2 (4)

The Sources

      -bi-product of high-temperature fuel burning

-anything that burns fuel

-cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, scooters, etc.

      -gas stoves

      -non-electric furnaces

      -charcoal grills

      -lawnmowers

          -solid waste disposal

          -incineration of refuse

-high concentrations can be found in confined spaces like parking garages, poorly ventilated       tunnels, or along roadsides during periods of heavy traffic

-emissions are highest when engines are idling or decelerating (3)

-dense traffic conditions and high air temperatures worsen emissions
