from jfk-T5 to washington heights
(yes, i do this a lot.)
-
(1)Find AirTrain stop at JFK’s Terminal 5
-
(2)Take AirTrain from Terminal 5 to Jamaica
(3) Take LIRR from Jamaica to Penn Station
(4) Take A/C train from Penn Station to 168th St
-
(5)Walk from 168th St Station to Christine’s
-
(6)Optional: do it by taxi
Leg 1 – Find AirTrain stop at JFK’s Terminal 5
- All Terminal 5 exits lead you to the baggage claim 2
-Once passing through the sliding doors and arriving at the baggage carousels, turn right and keep walking straight
- On your right-hand side, after oversized baggage area, find elevators and take two flights up to the top floor
- Exit top floor, proceed against the flow of people to follow signs for AirTrain
- walk to end of a huge, white, and very long hallway that curves to the left
- Go down escalator to the AirTrain boarding platform
Leg 2 – Take AirTrain from Terminal 5 to Jamaica
-
-CAUTION: there are multiple AirTrains that stop here. Ensure your train’s destination is JAMAICA STATION.
-
-Get on AirTrain, get off at Jamaica Station and follow people.
-
-The turnstiles grant you passage in exchange for AirTrain payment.
-
-Head to one of the ticket machines on the right and offer up $5 (cash/credit/debit) in exchange for an AirTrain-only Metrocard
-
-Swipe yourself through the turnstile, throw away that Metrocard (because they all look alike), and walk through the atrium and through the sliding glass doors on the left.
Leg 3 – Take the LIRR from Jamaica to Penn Station
-
-Congrats! You’re now on a platform above the tracks for the Long Island RailRoad. see the white-and-red tv screen? find a penn station-bound train that leaves at least 5 minutes from now and note its platform number.
-
-Head to the left of the tv screen, there will be a ticket vending machine about 10-20 feet away
-
-One-way adult ticket to Penn Station, PEAK HOURS if you came by redeye, Cash/credit/debit
-
-Head down to the platform, wait for train, jump in, snag comfy seat, and feel free to fall asleep because Penn Station is the last stop. Conductor will come by to take your ticket.
-
-Exit the LIRR train into Penn Station by following the crowd
Leg 4 - Take A/C train from Penn Station to 168th St
-
-Follow signs for UPTOWN A Train (the uptown C train also goes to my stop, but since it’s a local train, it makes more stops in between. This makes it a slightly slower train, but you’re more likely to get a seat on here. Either one is fine.)
-
-At any ticket vending machine outside the turnstiles, buy a new metrocard / unlimited ride / weeklong pass.
-
-DO NOT LOSE THIS.
- Hop on either the uptown A or uptown C trains
- If you’re on the A, the two stops before mine are 125th and 145th.
- If you’re on the C, the two stops before mine are 155th and 163rd.
Leg 5 - Walk from 168th St Station to Christine’s
- Exit the train at 168th and go up stairs, following everyone else
- Most people will funnel into a hallway next to the newspaper stand, follow them through the hallway
- At end of hallway, go to right of elevators, exit turnstiles, and go up the far stairs to the street level.
- You should be at the corner of 168th and Broadway, facing a Starbucks.
-
-Turn left and walk west along 168th St to the end of the very long block (corner of 168th and Ft. Washington.)
-
-Cross this street, continue along the same sidewalk that now curves to the right and goes slightly uphill. 168th St has morphed into Haven Ave.
-
-After you pass 170th and Haven, you’ll see a HUGE black gate on your left, with two HUGE apartment buildings behind it. Go through this gate and up the driveway.
-
-Give me a ring, I live in tower III and will be down in 2 minutes.
(6) Alternatively, you can take a $55 cab ride
NYC features two forms of taxi transportation, the yellow legal cabs and the black “gypsy” cabs, which aren’t as well-regulated by the city and set fares as they feel like, so you can either get ripped off or [theoretically but never heard of] get a good deal. They like to stake out the baggage area and ask if you need a taxi because they can do it “faster/cheapter/better.”
-
-If you decide to take a taxi, DO NOT accept a ride from anyone here. Go outside the baggage claim and wait in line for a YELLOW cab. Their fares are set at a flat $45 into Manhattan, and with tolls and tip considered, it comes out to $55-60.
-
-If you decide to do this, make sure they know that it’s Manhattan so they don’t need to turn on the meter.-You then tell them the intersection “171st and Haven” and if they don’t know Haven, just say “171st and Broadway” and then tell them “two blocks west”
-
-The taxi should pull through the big black gates on Haven (btw 170th and 171st) to lead to my apartment building.
DID YOU KNOW?
The official font of the NYC subway system is Helvetica. Just like the directions here. (No coincidence, really.)
