This is a screen shot of a Google Satellite view of Kapaun Kaserne (Barracks), in Vogelweh, just north of HoheneckenCLICK HERE to visit the actual and current Google satellite view of this area, where you can zoom out and in and move around. Kapaun Kaserne was the 1960s home of the 3rd Reconnaissance Squadron of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, plus the 53rd Transportation Truck Batallion, a frequent companion on maneuvers all over southern Germany. The big rectangular area to the left is the Motor Pool where all the M60 tanks, M88 Tank Retrievers, M114 armored personnel carriers, Jeeps, 3/4 and 2-ton trucks, etc, were kept and maintained. Unfortunately at this writing (October 2015) Google doesn't provide a street view so I can't check things out in any detail, but it seems to still be an American military base, although the motor pool just has cars in it. The building I worked in is the white one and bottom left, the one above it was the barracks where I lived (Headquarters Troop), and the one to the right of that one with orangish roof was the mess hall. The work building had previously been a top-secret lab for U-2 spy plane photos but after the 1960 incident the site was turned over to regular Army units (I can't give any citations for this except that it was "common knowledge" among those who worked in the building, where I arrived in mid-1963).
