Williamsbridge Oval Park in the Bronx at Bainbridge Avenue and East 208th
Street, with North Central Bronx and Montefiore hospitals in the background,
March 29, 2020, a beautiful scene. But these hospitals are lit up and busy
around the clock with COVID-19 cases, doctors and nurses and other personnel
working under dangerous conditions with inadequate protection. New York
City has the highest per capita death rate in the world and the Bronx has
the highest infection rate in New York City (27.6% according to antibody
testing) and also the lowest per capita income; furthermore poverty is
increasing in the Bronx while it decreases in the other boroughs. Bronx
residents with COVID-19 die at twice the rate of the city as a whole. In
this neighborhood (Norwood / Bedford Park / Kingsbridge Heights) the poverty
rate is is 27.4%. In the City as a whole the nonwhite COVID death rate is
five times higher that for whites. "Our neighborhood residents are more
likely to work in frontline jobs, have underlying chronic medical
conditions, lack personal protective gear and paid sick leave, and live in
overcrowded conditions in which it is impossible to quarantine safely."
— New York City Council Member Fernando Cabrera.
