Lenore Susan Maria da Cruz, née Rager: my grandmother Gus, 1896-1955. This is my favorite picture her, taken at her house in 1948 when Mom, Dad, Uncle Pete, and I were there. She had been living alone for some years and she made an art of it. She created a magical environment of lush vegetation, all kinds of animals, her weird savage paintings, huge jugs and vases and gourds... And delicious cooking! She loved me and Dennis and Mom a lot, and we loved her just as much. She and Dad barely tolerated each other. But I know she was very fond of Pete, who lived there himself on and off (unlike Dad, Pete was very easy to get along with).
