Like the rest of Frankfurt, the Altstadt was bombed during the war. Much of the Römerplatz was rebuilt by 1959 but you can still see some ruins at left and lower right. The rest of the Altstadt is gone. This shot was taken from the Dom spire; no other tall buildings are visible -- as in prewar Germany, church steeples dominate the skyline. The Rathaus (former City Hall) is the center of the three dark Gothic-looking buildings. Nowadays, huge skyscrapers loom over this site.
