The second and by far the biggest stop on our tour was Orchard Beach, "The
Bronx Riviera", a MASSIVE project
built by the WPA in
1934-36 and even today (2021) it's rated as Number One among all
400-some beaches on Long Island Sound. The beach crescent is a mile long,
formed by uniting various disconnected land masses and island. The
monumental pavilion is closed now after having been left to deteriorate
across the decades but you should have
seen it when it was
new. Supposedly work will start on a
75
million dollar reconstruction "soon". (I took the photo above and the
next two in 2014; the rest of the photos in this section were taken June 27,
2021, by Pam or me.)
