Field of Research
My current work involves the political and social involvement of Buddhists in China during the
1920s and 30s. The goal is to be able to link together more traditional
Buddhological studies that trace the development of doctrine with
historical studies of changes in Chinese political and social
thought. Liang Qichao (1873-1929) and Dai Jitao (1890-1949) are
examples of prominent figures who also had an engagement with Buddhism,
and sought to bring Buddhist teachings into the mainstream of Chinese
intellectual life. At the same time, the study groups and religious
societies that were founded during this period indicate a more
organized involvement of ordinary laypeople in Buddhist practice.
