What is EGGPLANT?
EGGPLANT is an academic game research group. We study games of all kinds, as well as the people who play them. Our interests are broad-ranging, including video games, traditional board and card games, role-playing games, games for teaching and learning, "serious" games, media literacy, the psychology of games, and related topics.
Where is EGGPLANT?
EGGPLANT is a part of Teachers College, Columbia University, located within the program in Communication, Computing and Technology in Education. We are also supported by the Department of Human Development and by a Spencer Research Training Grant. Our lab space at Columbia is open to game researchers and Columbia students; drop us a line if you'd like to come by.
When is EGGPLANT?
EGGPLANT runs a variety of events, both for research and for play; please see our calendar for more information. Or get EGGPLANT at your convenience by joining our mailing list or web boards!
Why is EGGPLANT?
EGGPLANT believes that games are serious business. By understanding play, we can learn about human cognition, collaboration, media effects, modern culture, creativity, improvisation and much more.
OK, but why is it called EGGPLANT?
Aside from the unnecessarily clever acronym, eggplants inexplicably show up in over a dozen video games throughout history. The most notable appearance was the Eggplant Wizard in the Nintendo game Kid Icarus (who also appeared as a bad guy in the television cartoon Captain N: The Game Master, a show which marks the pinnacle of media cross-promotion gone wrong).
