             SPECIAL TECHNOLOGY MINI CONFERENCE AT

                                CAIRO AMERICAN COLLEGE
 
 
      Dr. Gibran Majdalany an adjuct faculty in the Department of Organization and Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also works with former New York State Education Commissioner Tom Sobol as the Associate Director of both the Inquiry Ed.D. Program for school administrators, and the annual Superintendents Work Conference.  He has recently been appointed special assistant to former Governor Caperton of  West Virginia, who is heading the newly founded "Institute On Education and Government" at Teachers College, and has coordinated a special seminar for State Governors' Chiefs of Staff. Dr. Majdalany is currently focusing on the interrelation of technology and education, and teaches a graduate course at Teachers College on the application of computers and technology in education.  He conducts workshops in school districts in New Jersey and New York, instructing teachers on ways to bring the Internet into the classroom and to integrate it with curriculum.  He has also organized  seminars and presented on Distance Learning, technology and education in several states and abroad.

Exploring Teleconferencing, and Internet-based Video-conferencing Technology for the Classroom, Part I:
This session will discuss the basic elements of videoconferencing, the protocols and the emerging standards, CODEC (Compressor/DECompressor), and the most common ways of transmitting a videoconference: direct broadcast satellite (DBS), digital phone lines (ISDN or T1), regular phone lines (POTS), a corporate or school network (Ethernet) and most recently, the Internet. A few Internet-based software packages will be demonstrated, such as Netspeak (Webphone), Connectix (VideoPhone), Microsoft (NetMeeting), White Pine (CU-SeeMe), and the newest technology of MeetingPoint
and ClassPoint, showing the range of possibilities on the Web to connect teachers and students to each other, experts and mentors. Discussion, questions and answers will be encouraged. Distance Learning: Case Studies & Solutions. Part II
This workshop is a follow-up to Part 1, concentrating more on ClassPoint, with a discussion about the available resources, how to get started, and what to look for. Examples of initiatives in U.S. school districts will be described, and helpful handouts will be available. Over all, the session will be open for discussion, questions and answers.
