Friday, September 25, 1998 Derrick Carter and Green Velvet at Vinyl (PHATO/SATELLITE) I too went to Vinyl last night. Started the night off right by going to COlumbia University's beautiful main administation building Low Library to see the Deep Listening Bamd put together some sensual soothing ambient pieces on their "long string instrument" (a ROOM ai size violin - heh) they played 4 pieces - obe of which was an hour long but well worth, along with one collaboration with DJ Spooky/Paul Miller (who is now dreadless, yikes!). This show was very relaxing and at the same time energizing preparing for the next part of the night. Vinyl did the usual feel down search, leading to me to be jumpy. The fellow was like "moving will not help" whatever. No sneaker search this time. Got there about 12:30 or so and the room was more crowded than Vinyl usually is at that time. zto tell the truth Green Velvet (who no longer wants to be called Cajmere for some reason) wasn't as impressive to be spinning as when dojng a live PA - did he even spin any of his tracks? I didn't recognize any that were his own... In any case, the extra couches and plants and flowers were a nice touch in the lounge. (Were all the plants fake?) Derrick Carter was completely off the hook however!! Very very nice hard hard house. Had to stop dancing eventually because my left ankle started hurting, but could've danced straight after he warmed up for the full three hours otherwise ;) Now vinly is another story - people were happy to hear derrick carter and were dancing but I didn't see many smiles or much interaction in the crowd - so the vibe for myself came only from the music and the friends I was with. Side note: one friend went into the DJ booth at the end and said that Derrick Carter remembered the times he had spun in her hometown of Wellington, New Zealand! Otherwise she remarked he was sloshed - heh. Hell, nothing matters if he was still able to do his job - providing us with a magical musical journey - which he did very well indeed! DIdn't see too many people there from the list - Jami L, Jerry Luna, Antfactor & Doron, is it David, and an unfriendly Kim... So if you were there - TELL me what you were wearing ;) I had on my jncos, a green polo-type golf t-shirt, and I put on my nyc and ne-badges late in the evening. I was dancing/sitting by the far side of the room by the back stage area. Twas a fun musical adventure :-) Here's hoping Derrick comes back REAL SOON! He could easily fill Twilo or Roxy and SHOULD. .\.\ichael -- sentinel
