Substation, Feb 7, 1997, NYC Well Substation took place NOT at a con-ed substation but at Andy Warhol's third "Factory", in commenoration of the 10th anniversary of his death. It was weird none of this was announced or listed as part of the promotion of the party. Maybe that's called good cameflague, I don't know. ANyway, I thought it was a great time :) DOes anyone know what this space is used for normally? Is it a gallery of sorts or what? Soundlab seems to do excellent jobs at all of their parties. Got there about 12:30, and explored for a while - the next time I looked at my watch it was 2:00am - wow it WAS really crowded if it took that long to get from room to room. The crowds didn't leave until 3:30ish or 4ish it seemed and that was a bit of a bummer. While there WERE many rooms, they were connected by the smallest of passageways and stairways. The music was excellent in the jungle and techno rooms, and I just chilled for a while in the room off the techno room where there was a window open - it seemed like a whole lot of netters just randomly met there around 2:30ish - that was fun! Now while it was crowded crowded, people were generally friendly and non-agressive and that made for an interesting vibe considering I didn't run into many attitudes at all. This was clearly NOT a rave, but I think the tightness of the space is what defined that more than say the variety of people - although it was a huge different mismash of individuals. THis was a party where, if you found a space to dance, you grabbed it and OWNED it for the night - although ventilation was a bit of a problem. DIdn't see that many computer software or performance artist setups tho, the puppet in the ambient room on floor 1 was cool tho. Did anyone have any of the food? Comments on that? Sorry if this seems like a negative review since I actually quite enjoyed the party :) TONs of you there, that was fun. :) Sad I missed both Anthony's and Sheldon's sets tho - but I had to jet before you guys came on. Although it was nice to be in a NEW space, the soundlab folks should either just stick to SMALL places and sell appropiately (they should've only sold advance tickets), or take on the hugh places like the anchorage. I could see how it would have been easy to have gotten clasterphobic in that space. While sadly there wasn't much work done on lighting (basically the house lights were on or off, that was it) but the projections were nice, and the globe in the jungle room (Andy's Workshop according to the map) immediately caught ones attention on entering the room. Ah well - only wish the folks running the gig would've stuck to limitied tickets - but maybe someone else will do so and use the space more effectively in the future. .\.\ichael -- sentinel
