On another note, I went dancing at Expo last night for my friend Miriam's birthday party (some of you might have met her at Underground Solution.) And well, other than being with friends, the evening wound (surprising the double meaning) up sucking. The music early on was good hard house, and the physical space is great being an old broadway theater with great ventilation, lights, and so on. But after a while, attitudes started creaping in - funkmasterflex (no offense) came on, and the mc was like who's in the house? and he riffed on the fact the screams were largest from the jersey and brooklyn crowd. Other things were the folks showing themselves off, the lineup of girls prancing and dancing on stage - while they were beautiful of course the whole attitude just got depressing. Sirens were a pissor, along with the DJs ever so often pushing the EQs (maybe?) all the way out so you didn't hear the track/mix for seconds at a time - just highpitched hiss. The music was another story - I lost my groove sometime after the hiphop set - dunno who was spinning. It was interesting that it get on varying, but I also couldn't keep a groove on through it. I enjoy mixing of musics when it works (ala the star warz evening at Ameoba a few weeks ago), but the mixture of acid jazz, latin house, house, vocal house was not my thing. The music from about 2:30 or 3:00 on was mostly vocal house, stuff I haven't learned to appreciate yet. I think as we were leaving, things were starting to go back towards hard house. But after everything I described - a dance floor packed where you were elbow-to-elbow on all four sides, and a place where a fight broke out right near us -- any vibe for my night was long gone. :( I was curious as to expo since I hadn't been there before and as I haven't been to too many of the bigger "clubs" (only so far limelight, tunnel, and paladium). Oh well, guess I really need to hit Twilo/SoundFactory/etc to see the real state of the house scene in the city. Anyone else have good/bad experiences at Expo? It WAS a really nice space - with tons of bleachers to sit upstairs, not overly loud sound, great ventilation, HIGH ceiling and so on...
