Ninjatunes Presents FUNKINFUSION at the Cooler Monday, September 28, 1998 Wow - last night had some amazing music being spun!! Nice to see such a large list crowd (cormac, deryck, michal, paulh, dori, yvonne, jill, wendy is it?, anyone else?) and despite the cooler being such a small place I'm surprised we actaully found each other :-) I'm surprised they didn't use a bigger space because it could have been filled as well. Sadly I got to the cooler late cause I was trying to meet up with another friend, so arrived about midnight perhaps - only got to hear the last 5 or so tracks that mixmaster got to spin. I was surprised that he (and djs all) were spimnning on the hyper-bpm tip. These guys are normally known as chill djs/producers. In a way I was a bit disappointed because you don't get to hear downtemp and chill stuff out at all, and it can b e mindwarping when down right (reference sheldon drake's garden party a month or so ago - but then again I didn't see anyone else there other than peter.) In any case, a proper party would've been either twice as long or two nights in a row to showcase both styles of djing... In any case - the party was AMAZING - I really enjoyed what I heard of mixmaster - his collection is amazing because he has ALL wanna be electronic musicians around the globe sending him their output as demos. Nice clothes as well with a vinyl (??) t-shirt. In my opinion AmonTobin STOLE the show! Yes folks, the first track he spun had the most AMAZING beats and basslines. And he continued with latin-inspired tracks, jazz-inspired tracks and some just killer drum n' bass. I agree that the PA was WAY WAY loud - but those without earplugs should stuff them ears with tissue paper so you can properly enjoy the magic that transpired! I guess I might be partial to what is known as "noise" tracks. It was funny how calm and collected Amon was when he was spinning such insane tracks. Okay, he wasn't the best BEATmatcher but I thought his selection of material was ear-expanding. This is the loudest I've heard the PA pumped at the cooler, and once in a while it is kinda cool to be so totally engulfed in sound. However earplugs always help ;) It was sad that the sound was very distorted however. They could've fixed that I'm sure. Jonah Sharp had on both a cool shirt and some great jazzy tunes. I was actaully more impressed with his vinyl selection than when he normally does a live PA - but his atmospheric litebpm ambient does not do much for me. I didn't stay out his set - but Paulh - let us know how it went, k? Okie - time to leave work finally...See you all at the next installment of nyc-electronic-scenterfests ;) .\.\ichael -- sentinel (PS: Cormac what CD did you get free?!?!? I want one!! ;) )
