long delayed montreal report from June 1996 Visited Montreal, Quebec, Canada at the end of june - gave a paper at a conference, danced, heard a lot of music and hung out with friendly net-ravers! :) Dunno if any of you are on ne-raves right now - but Spooky, Gen and Christos were all super friendly. As were others such as Joe90 who I did not get to meet but was totally friendly over email :) HI to Billy too :) while I didn't hit any "proper" clubs, and completely passed by DNA records I did hit two great parties. Also the Jazz Festival and Carbbian festival were a blast two. On either end of my week I went to the massive party Sir-cus (supposedly 4000+ people?) and then the much smaller loft party Pollen. Sir-cus was a pricy party - what was it $30 or $35 Canadian? Three HUGE rooms, A GREAT lineup - sadly most of the headliners were on in the same time slot! :( I was disappointed by Westbam - hardish stuff but many train wrecks and an ego the size of Keoiki ;) REALLY REALLY enjoyed Derrek May's set - really smooth and sweet detroit techno. Doc Martin was fine. Dubtribe were fun as always, but as they were totally surrounded by people and you couldn't see them on the floor it was less able to get into the vibe. Didn't find out when DJ Sonic, Mark Farina or PWOG were on. :( Wasn't impressed with Jon Howards set in the house room. LIGHTS were amazing - maybe the best I've seen - great with lasers - patterns on all the walls. A bungee chord thing for people to do gymnastics on. Surprised to see SO SO MANY bare-chested guys at a rave - true it was hot....but not THAT hot. (un)dressed to impress I guess. lot o' jock types. Also - I was totally amazed that there were still hundreds of people (HUNDREDS!) dancing hard at 8 in the morning to Goa! :) That impressed me as I haven't been to parties that "late" where it was going so strong - (maybe I just don't go out enough ) (Parties - as opposed to clubs which seems comm here in NYC :) ) Next up - a really VIBEY 50-person loft party called Pollen thrown by Christos (on vrave) and others. I think I had a MUCH better time at this party. 6/29 The DJs were DJ Splenda / Mich / Analog Junkie - live PA / Beat Jacker - live PA / DJ Sabi / DJ Patrick I was flying out the next day so I stuck around and saw Analog Junkie, Beat Jacker (christos!) and DJ Sabi. Analog Junkie was doing a NICE NICE acid set. Beat Jacker put together a good unique set of live material - bringing in some tripy beats. DJ Sabi had some nice trance going. I wasn't too up for dancing so I chilled with Gen, Christos - met some people (Hey Meice!), and some non netters who were totally friendly. (even though I don't know much french and the people I spoke to did not always have the word in english at the tip of their tongue.) Music was fun - till the police came by and the volume was turned down, but then back up later :) Quite a nice venture out of the US :) over and out /\/\ichael -- sentinel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Hauben Teachers College Dept. of Communication Amateur Computerist Newsletter http://www.columbia.edu/~hauben/acn/ WWW Music Index http://www.columbia.edu/~hauben/music/ Netizens Netbook http://www.columbia.edu/~hauben/netbook/ Netizens Cyberstop
