Let's not get into the language business, but let's see if there are essentially new ideas about languages." And so on. Well, I used to draw big sketches on big sheets of paper. Then I would lose them. But I had pretty well wrapped up in me all of the topics that it would take to put interactive computing together. I deliberately talked about the intergalactic network, but deliberately did not try to do anything about netting them together, because it was becoming very difficult just to get them to run. The concept that would say: this is pertinent, this is relevant, and this we can let alone for now; so I would create a network of contracts in which one place might do some subset of things that did not necessarily fit together to make a total system. But if ============================== roberts:251:about communications, and that really, the idea of the galactic : use anything anybody else did. Everything I did was useless to the rest of the world, because it was on the TX-2 and it was a unique machine. So unless the software was transportable, the only thing it was useful for was written technical papers, which was a very slow process. So, what I concluded was that we had to do something about communications, and that really, the idea of the galactic network that Lick talked about, probably more than anybody, was something that we had to start seriously thinking about. So in a way networking grew out of Lick's talking about that, although Lick himself could not make anything happen because it was too early when he talked about it. But he did convince me it was important. ============================== sutherld:543:this the Intergalactic Computer Network. Lick was a wonderful guy; : SUTHERLAND: Well, I tried to do some things that would seem sensible. There were three things, I think, that I can mention, where I started new activities. Well, first of all, let me tell you about my major failure. Licklider had dreamed about having a network of computers, and in typical Licklider-ese he had called this the Intergalactic Computer Network. Lick was a wonderful guy; he had these wonderful words and ideas. He was just marvelous. So I thought I would have a go at that. I got the University of California at Los Angeles, which had three major computers, to put together a program to make a network out of the three. That was never very successful. I think it was never very successful ============================== taylor:1376:"intergalactic network." I asked him about this later... recently, : But we weren't funding them to do it. And so, here ARPA had a number of sites by this time, each of which had its own sense of community and was digitally isolated from the other one. I saw a phrase in the Licklider memo. The phrase was in a totally different context -- something that he referred to as an "intergalactic network." I asked him about this later... recently, in fact I said, "Did you have a networking of the ARPANET sort in mind when you used that phrase?" He said, "No, I was thinking about a single timesharing system that was intergalactic... So I said, "Well, what's clearly the right thing to do is to connect these places up and see if we can't make this ==============================
