Subject: I-List: Scarce/Yo La Tengo & well Teenage Fanclub. All At Irving Plaza, NYC February 16 1994. Went to see Yo La Tengo, and managed to catch one more band in with it. Got to Irving Plaza early enough to see Scarce - who put on a really good show! I'm really band at describing music - but they seemed punk, with a tinge of hardcore. There was a drummer, bassist (a cute ACTIVE gal.) and the singer/guitarist. The singer (male) had enough of the weirdo looks - His eyes pierced down to the core somehow - dressed in a nice funny way. Also the bassist was WILD - she was boucing up and down like there was no end. The drummer had a wierd kit - seemed like he had some sort of steel drum (from the island drum) which he would use at times. They were a lot of fun, and I would definitly go to see them again - a openening band that gets my thumbs up! :) (They were selling some 7" single, but when they performed it, that was the main song of theirs that I was NOT impressed by.) And and they were also filming this part of the show! Next up, Yo La Tengo - didn't know anything about them from before the show and had also never heard their stuff. My only knowledge was through this list and other net newsgroups, etc. I was not impressed by the first song, started with an organ(?) line of something like a police siren? However, after this song I removed my ear protection (oh my) in order to better hear the mix of the guitar (CRAZY CRAZY Guitar!) organ, bass, drums, etc etc. Yo La Tengo have a REALLY interesting sound - I liked it. The next song (I think??) was deadicated to Joe Namouth and had the drummer playing the organ and singing - this is what prompted me to check the ear plugs - this song was much softer. (Actually this was the 3rd or 4th song.) Definitly a LOT of fun. There were one or two songs I really clicked with - wierd percussion and CRAZY INSANE guitaring - loved that guitar - what does that guy do to it? Anyways... Left after Yo La Tengo - I've never been impressed or interested by the snibbits and snatches of Teenage Fanclub stuff I have heard, and well - I have classes tomorrow. So I will leave you on this note. I had A LOT of fun with the first band Scarce and hope to see them again, and Yo La Tengo was really neato and different with a wierdness factor - I will check them out again too... Anyone have any recommendations as to an album I might like of their's? (Gotta have that really crazy guitar work!) Over and out, -Michael
