General Announcements
In each issue of the Bulletin we intend to publish announcements
about members of the Society as well as items that may be of interest to
our readership. Please send relevant material (e.g., grant awards, honors,
recently published books, requests for information, employment opportunities,
etc., to the Editor.
- The 1994 American Psychological Association (APA) meeting in Los Angeles
will feature several symposia that should be of particular interest to
members of the Society. On Friday, August 12 from 9-l l AM, Michael Sperling
will chair a symposium entitled "Nonpsychoanalytic research contributions
to psychoanalytic theory and practice: Attachment theory", with papers
by Arietta Slade and Phillip R. Shaver, and discussion by Alicia F. Lieberman.
Harold Cook will chair a panel entitled "Intra- and interpersonal
processes in relatedness: Empirical explorations of self, lover, and family"
with papers presented by doctoral candidates Robin Lippert, Mary Calabrese,
and L. Sean Schwartz, co-authored by Harold Cook and with discussion by
Michael Sperling. On Sunday, August 14 from 1-3 PM, Michael Sperling will
chair a symposium entitled "For graduate students only: Prospects
for psychoanalytic thesis/dissertation research". Participants will
include William H. Berman, Harold Cook and James Miller.
- The Second International Congress On Integrative and Eclectic Psychotherapy
will take place in Lyon, France on June 22-26, 1994. For further information

- The APA Science Directorate has established a Dissertation Award Program
to assist graduate students with funding for their dissertations. Only
Student Affiliates of APA may apply for these funds, which are awarded
on a competitive basis. The l dissertation must be approved by the applicant's
committee prior to application; research may be in any area of psychology.

- The annual Division 39 Spring Meeting will take place at the Omni Shoreham
Hotel in Washington, DC from April 13-17, 1994. The theme of this year's
program is "Looking inward-looking outward: Psychoanalytic psychology
in the sociocultural context". Inquiries regarding the meeting should

- Each year the William T. Grant Foundation makes awards to young faculty
whose research pertains to the development of children and adolescents.
The successful applicant's institution receives up to $175,000 (including
indirect costs) over five years to provide partial support for the young
investigator. Preference is given to researchers whose work examines the
causes, correlates and consequences of stress in children and adolescents.

- Drs. Joseph Weiss and Harold Sampson, co-authors of The Psychoanalytic
Process (Guilford Press, 1986), invite Society members to participate in
their Ninth Annual Workshop in San Francisco, March 6-10, 1995. This week-long
workshop offers a unique opportunity for students and practitioners interested
in quantitative research on psychoanalytic hypotheses. The San Francisco
Psychotherapy Research Group has been carrying out research on Weiss's
hypotheses about unconscious mental functioning and the therapeutic process
for more than 20 years. Participants will have the opportunity for in-depth
study of these research methods and findings, to place them in the context
F of psychoanalytic theory and practice. For additional information or

- The Murray Center awards grants of up to $5000 to support research
(including doctoral dissertations) investigating topics related to human
development and personality, sex differences, and personality development

- The First International Conference on Bipolar Disorder will take place
on June 23 and 24, 1994 in Pittsburgh, PA. Speakers will include Frederick

- APA is participating with the American Association for the Advancement
of Science (AAAS) in a project funded by the MacArthur foundation, the
aim of which is to distribute professional journals to 12 major science
and technology libraries in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. For information

- Dr. Norbert Freedman, Director of the Unit for the Study of Communication
in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy at SUNY-Health Science Center, Brooklyn
has announced the availability of three fellowship positions. This program
offers eligible applicants a unique opportunity to participate in a two-year
combined clinical/research fellowship. Fellows participate in the delivery
of clinical services and in a research program concerned with the empirical
study of issues in psychoanalysis. A stipend of approximately $26,000 plus
fringe benefits is offered. Applicants may be either pre- or post-doctorate,
but must have completed an internship. Those interested should contact
