The
main sanctuary is surrounded by four fences, symbolic of its private and
enclosed quality; the layman is permitted to penetrate only the outermost.
The design of the three inner fences is exquisite and varied, and represents
one of the great aesthetic delights at Ise. Like many other features which
we will mention later, the fences are symbolic of the allegedly primitive
origins of the shrine.
