in this characteristic scene from the Genji scroll, the figures are all
seated directly on thin green mats with brocade borders. The only privacy
is provided by curtains hanging from racks that could be easily moved around.
The resulting environment is soft, porous, and richly textured. It is also
a very communal setting, offering little individual privacy. We must imagine
everyone speaking in hushed tones most of the time.
