While
Heian aristocrats carried on much of their private life in such shadowy
interiors, they also enjoyed constant contact with nature. This reconstruction
of a typical Heian palace shows how the buildings were arranged around
a spacious garden, offering varied glimpses of nature through screens and
curtains. Here we have the beginnings of the integration of garden and
house for which Japanese architecture is so well known.
