The
poetic appreciation of nature and seasons was also brought directly into
the living quarters in the form of landscape paintings, here seen on some
sliding doors and on a hanging curtain. Most of these paintings have specific
seasonal associations, and could be moved about to suit the actual seasons
outdoors. This particular style of landscape painting emerged in the early
Heian period, and like the kana script which was developing at the
same time, it represents a distinctively Japanese departure from Chinese
models.
