The
next scene occurs shortly afterwards. Kashiwagi is dead. Because of his
adultery an illegitimate son has been born to Nyosan, the new wife of Prince
Genji. In the scene which opens here, the text tells us, Genji is visiting
Nyosan, who like her fellow adulterer Kashiwagi has been stricken with
remorse and has decided to retire from the world by becoming a nun. As
in the previous scene, a descending diagonal leads us into the picture
but is immediately followed by a sign of trouble, the tangled ends of a
hanging curtain.
