The
skill of this depiction lies in the angle at which Genji is placed.
On the one hand, he seems awkwardly cramped, literally by the upper edge
of the scroll and metaphorically by the situation. At the same time, he
is genuinely enchanted by the baby; as the text tells us, "He played with
the child, fair-skinned and round as a ball, and bubbling with good spirits;
[He] was always laughing, and a very special light would come into his
eyes which fascinated Genji." But to really see these fascinating
eyes, we must take the liberty of turning the scroll at a ninety-degree
angle.
