El Nino events produce dramatic climatic changes that affect civilizations all across the globe. By using Argentina as a case study, one gets an in-depth look at how both the land and the people react to these events. Not only is the geographic area one of the most dramatically affected by ENSO, but its unique political, economic and social conditions make it a very interesting and dynamic case study. El Nino has greatly affected Argentina's agricultural production and economy, native ecosystems and biodiversity, local infrastructure, land use, habitability, as well as population survival. We intend to examine the scientific elements of ENSO events, specifically climactic changes leading to intense precipitation and flooding, agricultural-related impacts as well as forest fires. Also under examination are the societal, economic and governmental responses in the wake of extreme weather events, along with human contributions that compound the effects of such intense weather. We will review the steps being taken to improve the situation and what still needs to be done for Argentina to be able to more successfully endure the onset of these predictable, regular weather extremes. |
