The explosive growth of the Internet has fueled many information services that can be described as networked information systems. In such services a uniform data model (e.g., HTML) is used to describe the data and the TCP/IP protocol suite is used to provide distributed access to that data. In this talk we will examine the central issues surrounding both aspects of networked information systems: the data model and the protocol suite. In particular, we shall give an introduction to the HTML data model used in WWW information systems and illustrate how to construct pages in HTML for WWW browsing with links and the HTTP protocol.
We shall examine the issues of TCP/IP protocol suite and how data is transmitted through this network independent set of protocols. We examine issues in TCP/IP encapsulation and demultiplexing at the link, network, transport and application layers.
