I cranked up my shortwave yesterday to hear the Yiddish broadcast on Kol Israel, and was happy to hear an interview with "Mendele's own" David Braun, interviewed by Kol Israel's Leah Shlanger. A mekhaye! David was apparently representing the Yiddish-speaking youth of America, and did a fine job of course. She also interviewed a young Russian Oleh ostensibly representing the future of Yiddish among the younger Russian Olim. Fun. I had thought of it as simply synonymous with "es shmekt, shtinkt, ipesht [mit, fun]" but I note that Weinreich does not include "hern" in an olfactory sense in either Y-E or E-Y. Is it then slang? Or euphemistic? I am a senior at Yeshiva High School in Atlanta and at the same time I'm taking some courses at Georgia Tech. Next year I will be at Tech full-time. All of my grandparents come from Poland and they are also survivors. I don't think I need to explain how my parents learned Yiddish, and that I have learned from them. I'm not very good with Yiddish at all but I am very interested to learn more. I hope to have fun with this list. P.S. My brother's name is Mendel! 5)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 19 Feb 93 14:00:17 EST From JG13922@SWTEXAS.BITNET Fri Feb 19 13:29:30 1993 Subject: Introduction Ich bin a Yid fun a yor funfzig un hob mameloshen studiert bei Univ.
