(Circa 1940s, maybe '50s.) She had a wonderfully persuasive voice, partly sweet and soulful like an oboe, but partly relying on the reserve power of a trumpet. She would open her program singing: Darling, je vous aime beaucoup, Je ne sais pas what to do. Vous avez completely stolen my heart. In 19th century Russia that could be translated into Yiddish intermixed with Russian. I can imagine it would work because Russian speakers of Yiddish were bilingual (at least, maybe trilingual), familiar with Yiddish and Russian. Readers of English are assumed to be monolingual. Partly, that is what makes it so difficult to translate many works of Yiddish (sprinkled with Hebrew or Russian or Polish or English) into unsprinkled English. Footnotes may explain. Though footnotes are the bread and butter of scholarly workers, they are the wormy bane of art writers. I'm sure there are other operating factors, but this is all I gleaned from the top of my head (shpitz kop?? Naaah!!).
