Hence, 'sweater' or 'sveter' was anathema to him. (See Shuchat and Feldman 07.136) He insisted that we--my mother, Sonia was a superb knitter- and I use the word 'tulip'--with a palatalized 'l', or the diminutive 'tulipl.' Hence, I'd always thought it was a Russian borrowing. I regret to say that I'd never followed up on the etymology. Another word used regularly in our house for "sandwich" was 'koyrachl.' This was clearly adopted from the Paysach seder. However, I never knew anyone, outside of our, family, who used these neologisms. Yakira H. (The same cd has a very moving recording or "zog nit keynmol," by the way.) If I'm wrong in this sad assertion, by the way, I'd be delighted to be better informed. Yiddish Goes West On August 27 - 30, 1998, The Fifth Conference of the International Association of Yiddish Clubs (IAYC) will be held on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles. This is the first time the group will meet on the West Coast and in a prime vacationland. It follows successful conferences in Maryland, Toronto, Miami, and Connecticut. The UCLA Conference Center is in a quad with all meetings, dining, air-conditioned accommodations (beautifully appointed guest suites), and entertainment taking place around a central courtyard. Conference registration: until Feb. 28 is $295; March 1 until May l $335; after May 1 - $355. Two in a room with private bath. There also are bedroom suites (2 bedrooms, 2 persons per room) with shared bathroom. Meals are all kosher-style. However, glatt kosher meals can be furnished on request. By prior arrangement, you may stay before or after the Conference. Children up to age 15 $100. Student/college/work study scholarships may be available.
