After seeing numerous requests for lyrics on Mendele and other lists, and also looking for a way to store the Jewish lyrics I've accumulated, I decided that the web is a great way to build a database of Jewish song. So, here came Zemerl, the online interactive database of Jewish song, which you can find at http://www.princeton.edu/zemerl Currently, I have more than 300 Jewish songs on Zemerl, including *156 songs in Yiddish*. A listing for a song includes lyrics, translation, info about the song, and most songs are linked to sound clips from all over the Internet! So come shmooze at Zemerl, find lyrics to long-forgotten songs, find new songs, and then add a favorite song of your own to the site! (re request in last Mendele - we do have the words to Friling on the site). Also, very frequently, I get emails from people looking for lyrics. Currently, I am looking for lyrics to the following songs: Moyde Ani (as sung by Sarah Gorby) Sem' Sorok (Seven-Forty) Zayt Gezunt I like She (by Aaron Lebedeff) In an Orem Shtibele (Patshe, patshe kikhelekh) I would really appreciate any help in finding these. They are Zussman Segalowicz & Alexander Ziskind Maimon. 1) Zussman Segalowicz wrote over than 40 books in Yiddish, and was mentioned in this list a few times. I don't know much about his life, except him being in Argentina for a while. He was still alive in 1948. 2) Alexnder Ziskind Maimon - born in 1810 to Rabbi Moshe Maimon of Sereje, Lithuania. I have a copy of one of his books called "Kovetz Ma'amrim V'Inianim Shonim", which is his expalnation to the Talmud. The book was published in Vilna in 1894 by his brothers Shaul & Tzvi Hirsch. He passed away in 1887 in Vilna or Sereje, Lithuania. My questions are: 1) Do you know one of these 2 authors? 2) Can you tell me anything about their lives? 3) What books did they publish? I found nothing in the Kosciusko Foundation Polish-English dictionary, nor was it indexed in Stutchkoff. Instead of looking further asked for help. Help came back with a citation from the Lifshits (1869) rusish-yidisher verter bukh: smetine. But why plural? And since when sour cream with tea? I turn to the 1984 rusish-yidisher verterbukh (Shapiro, Spivak, Shulman) and find that slivkes have been transformed into "shmant" (sweet cream)! Sweet cream with tea in Poland/Lithuania? And plural? There are deep mysteries here. My correspondent thinks Mendelistn will eat this one up. I hope so.
