A simple explanation of the census form is available in Yiddish at the Census Bureau's web site. Just go to http://www.2000.census.gov and then click on "help." You will see a choice to click on "Language Assistance Guides," and then you can click on Yiddish as a choice of language for two different assistance guides. If you click on one of them, you will get to the census assistance guide in Yiddish. The Census Bureau appears to have had available only a Hebrew font, so the guide omits pasekh and komets under the aleph, etc. Jim Feldman Washington, D.C. 2)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 04:56:27 -0500 (EST) From: Bernard Katz Subject: 'Az me laybt' Zuntug hot mine tayer mume Raizel genitst di zugenish: "az me leybt on rekhenung, shtarbt me on vide". I translate this as: "if one lives without calculation (keeping account of things), then one dies without absolution". I would appreciate comment and a better translation from the list. This was the first time I had heard the expression and I have but little context for it. The second 'half, of the saying is of course: "az me leybt mit rekhenung, shtarbt me mit vide". A shaynem dank, Bernard Katz 3)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 08:17:53 -0500 (EST) From: Yitztyco@aol.com Subject: Nalokes, hoyl, minde, tzvinter, tzchelya This is a song I recorded years ago doing field research in Bessarabia... actually in the town of Tirgu Frumos...can anyone help me with these lines: Don't know the words: Nalokes, hoyl, minde, tzvinter, tzchelya S'hat gerent S'hat gerost, Nalokes shaf hob ikh gepashet Er hot brindze shaf un voll ikh geblibn hoyl un gaul Nisht kayn shaf un nisht kayn brindze un kayn karmeh far der minde saiden nor a grube oif tzvinter iberkumen dort dem vinter shpielt a doina shpiel a tzhelyah a dank Yale Strom 4)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 16:38:27 -0500 (EST) From: MSchaecht@aol.com Subject: kisnen In response to Eliezer Niborski (09.069), Shiye-Motl Lifshitses Yidish-Risisher Verterbikh (l876) brengt farkisnet vern un fartaytsht es vi 'zaleplyatsya', un zayn Rusish-Yidisher (l869): kisnut' - zover vern. My e-mail friend's mother from Tulchin (near Vinnitsa) used to sing a song about the Tallith (prayer shawl) being taken from the cradle to the grave. She would love to have the lyrics of this song, since she doesn't quite remember it. Perhaps someone in this group may know it.
