Walter Roell 3)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2000 09:29:12 -0400 (EDT) From: aptroot@phil-fak.uni-duesseldorf.de (Marion Aptroot) Subject: Doctoral stipend at the University of Amsterdam The Menasseh ben Israel Institute for Jewish Social and Cultural Studies (an academic cooperation of the University of Amsterdam, the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam and the Jewish Historical Museum, Amsterdam) and the Chair in Yiddish Culture, Language and Literature of the Heinrich Heine University Duesseldorf are conducting a research program on "Yiddish in the Netherlands: an expression of Ashkenazic culture." For one of the research projects within the framework of this program, "The Yiddish press in Amsterdam in the seventeenth century. An edition of the Kurant (1687-1688), with translation, introduction and commentary," the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research will provide means for the position of junior researcher in the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam. A junior researcher will be engaged in research and take courses, working towards a doctorate (the project will result in a doctoral thesis to be published in book format). The project encompasses a critical edition of the available copies of the first known Yiddish newspaper, the "Kurant". This paper appeared in the second half of the seventeenth century and is known in the secondary literature as the "Dinstagishe un fraytagishe kuranten." The edition will include the complete Yiddish text of all surviving copies of the "Kurant" (August 13, 1686 - December 5, 1687), an English translation, detailed annotations and an introduction. The introductory chapters will deal with the cultural and historical background of the "Kurant", present an analysis of the sources and analyze the following aspects of these Yiddish newspapers: the place of the "Kurant" in the history of the Dutch and of the Jewish press, its contents and style, its reception history and its editorial quality. The researcher should have a command of Yiddish, German and Dutch, be able to read secondary literature in Hebrew and should have a degree in history, language, and/or literature (preferably with a background in Jewish studies). The application should be accompanied by a CV, a list of publications (if any), and letters of recommendation. Send your application to: Menasseh ben Israel Institute, Dr. Emile G.L. Marion Aptroot 4)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 09:58:51 -0500 (EST) From: "Marion" Subject: Passover in Public: A Query I would like to thank everyone who responded to my earlier Mendele query on the Yiddish folk choruses and conductors. I am now doing some research on "Passover in public," or the institutional seder traditions of the Workmen's Circle, the Yiddish shules, and organizations of the Jewish left. If you have ever celebrated pesakh in a Driter Seder, Third Seder, Cultural Seder, a 'hotel seder,' or one of the 'model seders' for schoolchildren in the Yiddish shules,I would like to hear from you and to find out what it was like to participate in these kinds of events. I am also looking for Yiddish hagodehs, as well as seder programs, photographs, movies, audio or video recordings, or any other documentary materials. Marion S. Jacobson Brooklyn, NY 5)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 15:34:11 -0500 (EST) From: Savoyid@aol.com Subject: Yiddish Gilbert & Sullivan article in Hadassah Magazine The April 2000 issue of Hadassah Magazine has a three page illlustrated story on Gilbert & Sullivan in Yiddish. I will be happy to respond to any inquiry about this project in regard to booking a show, obtaining recordings - or to anyone wishing to appear at a casting audition. Al Grand 6)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 2 Apr 2000 01:45:17 -0500 (EST) From: "David Hewitt" Subject: science fiction in Yiddish Would you happen to know if there are any science fiction books written and published in Yiddish? Thank you! Sincerely yours, David Hewitt 7)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 02 Apr 2000 10:35:25 -0700 From: "Morris Feller" Subject: Kotik's memoirs For some time now I have had the great pleasure of receiving Kotik's Memoirs in the Mendele Review with the option of converting all the transliterated Yiddish into real Yiddish. To date I have been able to download and printout about 65 pages of beautiful Yiddish text. I will be excerpting parts of this material to use as reading material for my leyenkrayz. As a sign of my sincere thanks for all this bounty, I have written, and will write, to those responsible for doing this wonderful work. I think it would be most appropriate if many of the Mendele subscribers would also write to those responsible for carrying on this important work: Noyekh Miller, Leonard Prager, Lucas Bruyn, Refoyl Finkel, Iosif Vaisman and Atelier Fluxux Virus. Let us all write to them, and wish them Yishur Ko'akh. I'm trying to find reviews of Jewish-themed Broadway plays, such as Anne Nichols' "Abie's Irish Rose," and Montague Glass's "Partners Again."
