It describes an adult male. We looked up the word in both Weireich and Harkavy who define the word as a chestnut tree. Strange! Do any of you know what it really means? A shenem dank eikh. Sylvan Beer syracuse, NY 9)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 00:11:59 -0500 From: "Elisa Steinberg" Subject: thank you note Right after you posted my question about Yiddish speakers in Chicago, I got many answers, with names and telephone numbers, and some people even called me! Now I know about a leyenkraitz once a month, and some other activities. Plus names of really nice native speakers who called me home and left messages. I'll contact them tomorrow. This is really exciting. I also got a note from someone in Poland who is studying the influence of Yiddish in the intonation of Polish (I guess, when spoken by Polish Jews). We'll trade whatever we find from now on. Mendele is a treasure.
