My research focuses on understanding more about how water is distributed and used in Egypt's agricultural sector. I am currently working on my dissertation, which draws on a year of ethnographic fieldwork in Fayoum governorate and Cairo. My aim is to use the flow of water as my starting point and to look across temporal and spatial scales at the ways in which various actors (farmers, water policy makers, international consultants, and donors) determine how this valuable resource is used. I draw on work from environmental anthropology and science and technology studies to explore four central themes: water scarcity, the participation of water users, land reclamation, and agricultural drainage.
