Mother Hagedorn's Family
think it should be 1820
Frederick and Charles Von Prahl were born and raised near Hamburg,
Germany and came to America around the of 20. [sic] Grandpa Prahl was already
here, when Grandma arrived to join him in this country with her two
oldest children, Adelaide and Johanna (who died at sea). They came
over in a sailing vessel which made the trip in about [...] month. Johanna,
a few weeks old, died on the trip, and was buried at sea.
Miss Storch, Grandmother's sister, and my own great aunt, Married a
Doctor Berg. My Greatgrandfather, Charles von Prahl, was Head of the
of the Library of the Royal Family in that part of Germany, which
at that period was under Danish rule, he directed the Royal School-
book Library (Konigliche, Kaiserliche Schulbuchhandlung.) Grandma's
Maiden name was Storch. The Storch's were a fine and well to do family.
Mother was born in Attesle, Schlesweg, near Hamburg, Germany, under
the Danish flag. At that time, Schleswig Holstein was setted mainly
by Germans, though actually a Danish province. Later, Schleswig
Holstein became part of the German Empire. So it happened that my
mother, Adelaide Hagedorn, was born a Dane. I used to hear my mother
tell of a relative of the Storch family having been "Lady-in-waiting"
to the queen of Denmark. This is all I know about that family, but
of course Grandpa Prahl had more children who were born in America.
Alma, Emma, Fred, Ed, and Charles. Counting mother, and a sister lost
at sea, there were eight children. Our cousin Adelaide (Prahl)
Dickinson was Ed Prahl's daughter.
The above date was compiled and written by Emma Hagedorn,
August 1, 1952.
Charles Von Prahl must be our Great Great Grandfather,
and I can't be sure which was our Great Grandfather. If
I only had an address I'd write. M.
